Working with separate Course Offerings

Laatst gewijzigd op

This article will cover what you need to know before working with separate course offerings.

Course Offering Management

How do I request separate Course Offerings?

Please refer to our uSis Brightspace Integration guide for more information.

Should I use separate Course Offerings for 1 Thesis Course in uSis?

Although we advise to use just 1 Course Offering per Thesis Course in uSis, it is still a possibility to create multiple Course Offerings for 1 Thesis Course.

Please refer to our Thesis Courses manual for more information on this matter.

In case you need advice or have questions on this matter, please feel free to contact FB SOZ LMS. We can discuss all the options and review the impact of these options.

Who can create and manage separate Course Offerings?

This action will be executed by your faculty's uSis team, see the uSis-Brightspace integration for more information.

Course Continuation with separate Course Offerings

The two main advantages of separate Course Offerings are the following:

  • You can easily copy the course for next year;
  • You can create a separate environment per Instructor, where Instructors are not bothered by the work of colleagues.
What do I need to do when I want to copy a course?

There isn't much that can go wrong with copying a course to another course (provided that Sections are not used). You can choose to copy the course yourself, let the instructor copy the course or request a CCB

Content Management in separate Course Offerings

With the use of separate Course Offerings instead of Sections, you have to worry less about setting the right Restrictions and/or Release Conditions. Therefore, you can just design the course as you would normally do.

How should I approach the design of separate Course Offerings?

In case your separate Course Offerings have a similar structure and/or content, it might be useful to first design 1 Course Offering with all the needed assignments and documents. Next, you can copy that course to all the other separate Course Offerings.  Finally, your instructors can work from there and finish setting up the course.

User Management in separate Course Offerings?

Within a course, the roles Instructor/Assistant Instructor/Course Builder/Grader all have acces to all students. This implies that they can see all students in a course and see all their submitted work.

You have the option to use the Tutor role for groups.

Why should I consider using Tutors while using separate Course Offerings?

Since you have decided to separate your students and instructors in different Course Offerings, it might not be useful to use the very restricted Tutor role. However, you are still able to use the Tutor-role and enroll them in Groups (instead of Sections). This way, you are able to let Student/Teaching Assistants (with a staff member account!) asses only certain groups of students.

Nevertheless, if you have no need for restricted assessment, we strongly discourage you from using the Tutor-role in your courses.

What can a Tutor do within a course and group?

The purpose of the Tutor role is that he/she can only assess students' work for his/her own group(s). The Tutor can not add content, place announcements, or do any other work related to content management.

Please refer to our Roles and Permission manual for more in depth information about roles within Brightspace.

How do I enroll staff members as Tutors in a Group?

First enroll the Tutor to the course:

  1. Go to Course Tools > Classlist.
  2. Click on Add New Participant.
  3. Search on name / ULCN username.
  4. Select role Tutor.

Next enroll the Tutor in the Group(s):

  1. After you added the Tutor to the course.
  2. Click on Course Tools > Groups.
  3. Click on a Group.
  4. Search for the Tutor.
  5. Add checkmarks for all the Groups he needs to be enrolled in.
  6. Click on Save.

Bulk enrollment is an option!
