Working with Sections

This article will cover what you need to know before working with Sections.

Section Management

How do I request Sections?

Currently our Integration team is working on a manual on how to request Sections for your course.

It is good to know that a Faculty can decide on the section name! The section code is however set, due to the uSis Brightspace integration.

How do I use Sections for Thesis Courses?

Please refer to our Thesis Course Manual.

Who can create and set Sections?

Since sections are used in the uSis Brightspace integration, it is of great importance that the section codes and number of sections is equal to uSis. Therefore, only FB SOZ LMS is able to create and manage sections to bring human mistakes to a minimum.

Course Continuation with Sections

It is important to know that it is not possible to copy sections accross courses. Furthemore, it is also not possible to copy release conditions based on section enrollment across courses.

What do I need to do when I want to copy a course that uses sections?

For starters, you are able to copy all content and assignments within a course to another course. The problem is that you need to reattach new release conditions each time to all the assignments/content items you may have set.

You can save yourself a lot of work by using a smart course design that is intended for courses with a lot of sections. Please see here for more information [manual under construction].

Content Management in Sections

By default all visible content in a course can be accessed by all students in that course. You need to place restrictions and/or release conditions on content items or units in case you want to make content only visible for students off a perticular section.

How can I make content available for a Section?

Select Classlisst > Section Enrollment as a Condition Type for Release Conditions.

Please refer to the How do I set up Release Conditions manual for more guidance.

User Management in Sections

Within a course Instructor/Assistant Instructor/Course Builder/Grader all have acces to all sections. This implies that they can see all students in a course and see all their submitted work.

The Tutor role only has access to the submitted work of his/hers own section students.

What can a Tutor do within a course and section?

The purpose of the Tutor role is that he/she can only assess students' work for his/her own section(s). The Tutor can not add content, place announcement or do any other content management stuff.

Please refer to our Roles and Permission manual for more in depth information.

How do I enroll staff members as Tutors in a Section?
  1. Go to Course Tools > Classlist
  2. Click on Add new Participant
  3. Search on name / ulcn username
  4. Select role Tutor and choose a Section

If the Tutor needs to be enrolled in more sections please follow the steps below:

  1. After you added the Tutor to the course and at least one Section
  2. Click on Course Admin > Course Offering Information
  3. Click on Sections
  4. Select the desired sections and click on Enrol
  5. Search for the Tutor
  6. And add checkmarks for all the sections he needs to be enrolled in.

Bulk enrollment is an option! [manual under construction]

Why do I need to select a section when I manually enroll a staff member as Instructor/Assistant Instructor/Course Builder/Grader?

Unfortunately, that is how Brightspace works when Sections are enabled. You have to pick at least 1 Section when you manually enroll instructors to a course offering.

Please note that although you select a section, an Instructor/Assistant Instructor/Course Builder/Grader always have access to all sections.
