Tips and Tricks Bulk Group Enrollment

Laatst gewijzigd op

This page covers some tips and tricks regarding group enrollment.

How to find all the Group IDs for a large amount of groups?

Please note that this method does not work if you do not create all the groups at once.

Group IDs are generated as soon as you create a group. If you create 50 groups at once, the chances are the groups IDs are ascending.

To verify this assumption you'll need to check the Group IDs of the first and last group. If the difference in group ID equals N - 1, where N is total number of groups, there is no need to check the group IDs of the other groups.

Example

ScreenSteps - Google Chrome

Goal: I need to retrieve the group IDs for all 50 groups.

  1. Open Group 1 and look for the group ID in the URL
    • In casu: 7489
  2. Open Group 50 and look for the group ID in the URL
    • In casu: 7538
  3. Does the difference equal N - 1?
    • In casu: 7538 - 7489 = 49
    • Total - 1= 50 - 1 = 49
    • So yes!

If the difference equals N - 1, where N is total number of groups, there is no need to check the group IDs of the other 48 groups.

Is there a way to retrieve a list of all group IDs?

In case you rather want a list of group IDs in a specific course or courses, you can request a list per mail [email protected].

Please note that this list always contains the data of "yesterday". Brightspace data is refreshed daily at 23:00. This means, that if you created groups today before 23:00, you can request a list of the group IDs next day at the earliest.

If you created groups after 23:00, you can request a list of the group IDs the day after tomorrow.

Example: I created the groups on Wednesday 23:34, so Friday I can request the list I need.

What a drag...what are my other options?

  • Let students enroll themselves in groups - Create Self Enrollment Groups
  • You or an instructor can manually enroll/unenroll students in a group via Manage Groups > Enroll users
  • Keep hope! D2L is investigating bulk group enrollment within course offerings. In that way you or an instructor can upload enrollment files within a course and you are less dependent on central support.

Please note that this only concerns enrollments in Brightspace Groups.. and not the enrollments from uSis groups into either sections or course offerings. That is completely different.

More information on this process will be provided as soon as the technical design is ready.
